British Designer Antony Price, Celebrated for Designing for David Bowie and Duran Duran, Passes Away at Age 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, such as the light-hued ensembles that became famous from rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance on social media."
His passing follows just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen modelled a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.
A Pioneering Career
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London during the sixties to enroll at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he started his work in clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with outfits on the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the wedding dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A frequent collaborator of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in crafting form-fitting garments made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, such as a number of outfits for her US tour following her marriage.
After a career spanning more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in collaboration with the label 16Arlington.
