Daughter of Former South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma Refutes Terrorism Accusations as Trial Starts
The child of former South African President Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terrorism-related accusations at the start of her trial in the port city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over remarks she made on digital networks several years back during violent protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the apprehension of her dad.
A period of anarchy in several parts of the country in July 2021, including theft and fire-setting, resulted in at least 300 individuals deceased and resulted in damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).
The defendant has been alleged of inciting this turmoil and faces allegations of incitement to commit terrorism and public disorder.
Context of the Legal Matter
The unrest were centered in the regions of Gauteng region and KZN and followed the previous president's arrest for disobeying a legal directive to testify at an inquiry into allegations of impropriety while he was serving as president.
The defendant has always denied the charges against her, with her lawyer earlier labelling the government's evidence as weak.
She has also frequently stated the allegations against her were an bid to address political grievances with her dad after he started his own political organization and campaigned against the African National Congress.
Support and Case Arguments
This was echoed by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and kinship targeting" against the former president and his kin.
A few of backers from her group, uMkhonto weSizwe, turned up outside the provincial high court, while her parent and other party leaders participated in the hearings inside.
The defense has stated that the proof presented by the state is inadequate and does not have substantial grounds for a guilty verdict.
