Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a collection of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.
He commented in a statement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have served, excited about the prospects of the enterprise, and eagerly await tracking their development".
Summers, who once led the prestigious university, declared on earlier this week that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.
Message Exchange
The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the official communicated with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 arrest for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it accepted his determination to depart.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," the organization commented.
Legislative Background
This development comes after the entire Congress of Congress voted on Tuesday to approve a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its files on the case.
The measure will then proceed to the administration of President Trump for approval. The President has stated he intends to approve the measure, after changing his stance on the subject following objections from his supporters.
Correspondence Findings
A batch of Epstein-related emails released by the legislative panel days ago referenced several high-profile figures in the billionaire's previous network, without suggesting any legal wrongdoing by those figures.
The communications showed that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to introduce Summers to prominent world leaders.
Individual Statement
After the emails were released with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to continue communicating with Mr Epstein".
He added that he desired "to restore confidence and fix relationships with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held leadership roles under two Democratic presidents; functioning as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as director of the White House economic team under President Obama.
He led the university from the early 2000s and remains a professor there. When stating his departure from public roles previously on this week, he stated he would maintain his educational duties.
Additional Consequences
Following Summers' statement on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, verified that Summers was no longer connected with the institution.
Summers entered the directorate of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a defeated move to oust its top executive OpenAI's head.
