I believed I nicked it - Carey on overturned decision.

Australian gloveman Alex Carey revealed he believed he had nicked the ball when he was reprieved on DRS on day one of the 3rd Ashes series Test versus the English.

Following his reprieve on 72, Carey crafted a superb 106 to guide the hosts reach 326-8 at the close in the Adelaide Oval.

The Key Moment

The home side were 245 for 6 when Carey went for a cut to the bowling of Josh Tongue.

The England team appealed confidently, certain they had detected an edge, but on-field official Ahsan Raza remained unconvinced.

After skipper Ben Stokes opted to review the decision, the replay examined by TV umpire Chris Gaffaney indicated a spike however this registered prior to the ball had reached the bat.

Gaffaney further stated he was of the opinion there was a clearance between the bat and the ball.

Consequently, Carey was allowed to continue.

"There was a sound, I thought I'd nicked it," commented Carey.

"Had I been given out, I likely would have reviewed, but without much conviction. It was a nice sound as it passed the bat."

Ongoing Scrutiny

Discussion has swirled about 'the sound wave technology' during the series after a number of unclear incidents.

Bowling coach David Saker indicated the touring side may escalate this latest incident to a higher level with the match official Jeff Crowe.

"We haven't acted yet, but following today's events, that could change," Saker remarked.

"It's been a worry for us all series long. We shouldn't be talking about this after a day's play, it should just be better than that. It is what it is."

Personal Milestone

Carey's century was his maiden in Ashes cricket.

It was also an poignant moment for Carey, whose father died in September. His spouse was in tears in the crowd as the batsman celebrated by pointing to the heavens.

"To make a hundred here in front of home fans and family was special," said Carey.

"You can probably understand my glance skyward. It's hard not to get emotional. It was a fantastic feeling."

History of Controversy

Carey is not new to Ashes controversy.

He was the wicketkeeper who famously stumped Jonny Bairstow at Lord's in the 2023 series, leading to a heated final day.

Regarding the overturned decision he added: "The technology clearly wasn't synchronized. It is just the way cricket goes - sometimes you have a bit of luck."

"I might have gotten away with one."
