Illegal dump in Oxfordshire Witness
Massive waste site

The area has been described as an "environmental catastrophe".
Journalist inspected the scene and stated the heap appeared to be "twenty feet in height at least".

Illegal dumpers have dumped a huge quantity of waste in a field in Oxfordshire.

The "environmental catastrophe developing in plain sight" is around 150m (490ft) long and 6m (20ft) high.

The massive heap has appeared in a plot of land adjacent to the River Cherwell near Kidlington.

Parliament representative highlighted the issue in parliament, declaring it was "threatening an ecological catastrophe".

Protection organization stated the unauthorized rubbish dump was established about a recently by an illegal operation.

"This represents an ecological disaster developing in full view.

"Every day that passes elevates the danger of toxic run-off entering the aquatic network, poisoning wildlife and endangering the health of the complete catchment.

"The Environment Agency must act promptly, not in extended periods, which is their typical action timeframe."

A restriction order had been implemented by the environmental authorities.

It is hard to distinguish any specific bits of waste as it looks to have been broken up with dirt combined.

Some of the garbage from the top of the mound has toppled and is now merely five metres from the stream.

The River Cherwell is a feeder stream of the River Thames, which signifies it runs through Oxford before joining the Thames.

Parliament representative said the cost of removing the waste would be substantial

The official asked the government for help to remove the unauthorized dump before it resulted in a fire or was carried into the river system.

Speaking to MPs on this week, he said: "Lawbreakers have deposited a mountain of illegal plastic waste... amounting to substantial weight, in my constituency on a water-adjacent land adjacent to the River Cherwell.

"River levels are increasing and temperature readings indicate that the waste is also warming, increasing the danger of fire.

"Environmental authorities reported it has limited resources for regulation, that the estimated price of disposal is higher than the complete twelve-month funding of the municipal authority."

Cabinet member said the administration had inherited a struggling recycling sector that had caused an "epidemic of unlawful waste disposal".

She told MPs the organization had implemented a prohibition notice to stop additional access to the area.

In a announcement, the authority said it was investigating the situation and requested for evidence.

It stated: "We acknowledge the public's frustration about situations like this, which is why we take action against those culpable for waste crime."

A recently published study determined initiatives to address major waste crime have been "critically under-prioritised" notwithstanding the problem growing more extensive and more advanced.

The Environment and Climate Change Committee proposed an independent "thorough" investigation into how "endemic" waste crime is dealt with.
