Citizens have gathered across the country to mark 24 months since the Hamas-initiated attack on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

The incident saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Second World War.

Israel responded by initiating a defensive operation in Gaza which has claimed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.

"The violent adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will not pose a danger to Israel".

Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official memorials until October 16th - after the completion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but ceremonies still occurred across the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas assault was held in Tel Aviv. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was aired across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the conditions of the proposal.

A high-ranking representative knowledgeable about the negotiations said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the morning session finished without significant progress, amid conflicting views over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart combat after the first phase of the deal.

He commented that the negotiations are "difficult and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but noted that mediators are striving to close the gaps between the both parties.

Essential Issues in Talks

  • A permanent truce
  • The trade of the captives still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The removal of troops from Gaza
  • Measures for assistance deliveries
  • Future management of the territory

Public Reaction

In Tel Aviv's memorial area previously, young a woman - whose sibling survived the incident on the gathering, where many attendees were lost their lives and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - told: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until all the hostages come back not a single person will be secure."

"When we see everyone home again, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she added.

In front of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the families of the captives. Israel states forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, 20 of whom are believed to be living.

Protester Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement necessary for the captives to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that about the majority of Israeli citizens desire the war to conclude in return for the release of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to remember the victims.

From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where observers said the severe Israeli shelling persisted.

In the main city, bombardments were reported in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, area and Nasr districts and in the eastern area of the community, as well the camp to the north-west.

"As the dusk falls, the anxiety appears with it," relocated urban resident a local woman, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"My family are terrified of the attacks. Throughout the evening we are resting together, holding each other, especially my little child who places his face on me throughout the night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see developments. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be finalized and that the war will return to us."

Health Situation

The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern district.

Nasser hospital in the southern city of Khan Younis reported two more fatalities had been delivered. One of them was killed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to get aid to the southern area, medical staff stated.
