Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich

Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich.

A Major Signing for the WSL Side

Schüller, who has half a year left on her deal, has been a prolific goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the WSL side.

Departure from Munich was expected after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the club's supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.

It was reported in December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its top strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the move have now been completed.

Consistent Goal Threat to Boost the Forward Line

The experienced striker's arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.

  • Over seven straight seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
  • She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.

Gathering Momentum at Old Trafford

The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United seem to be building momentum.

Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.

In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought further business:

  1. The acquisition of Swedish right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
  2. The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.

On the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from the middle of the park.”

The new defender, having joined from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
