Throughout a large portion of season 5 of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the recollections of Henry Creel. Their quest for a way out in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to witness again a life-altering moment from Henry's early years—a discovery that could contain the secret to his downfall permanently.

Upon meeting Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies beyond the cave. When she lines up her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry find an injured and paranoid man. Attempting assistance, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act wasn't just a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to sell to the Communist spies, who were keen to start their version of the tests. The man in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Given what is revealed about his research, the case most likely held samples of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, causing the awakening of his powers—powers he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.

Another possibility, the box could have held dark matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day as a different person. Throughout the play, he struggles with the control of a sinister presence, similar to how the character Will was possessed by the entity in season 2.
