The retail giant Introduces Purchase Limits on Pokémon TCG Products

As a notable development, Walmart has started enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card items customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This new rule officially takes effect as of early November, according to a company memo shared with employees.

Addressing Scalper Activity

Although not formally announced by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was influenced by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer purchasing an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee seen in the video faced widespread backlash for permitting the large-scale transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card boxes or packs each time they enter. However, the wording has raised questions due to its lack of clarity. What exactly qualifies as a "box" is not defined, and whether someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes is uncertain.

Additionally, since the limit is based on individual trips, in theory a determined scalper could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather significant stocks over several hours.

The Reseller Crisis

For the average collector, such efforts might seem over the top, but for scalpers, it's standard practice. Over the past few seasons, scalpers have significantly added to frequent stockouts of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to sell unopened products for a profit, whereas some search for rare cards that can command extraordinary prices. For instance, the Mega Lucario ex card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 on various platforms.

Looking Ahead

This policy change coincides with the imminent release of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Early listings already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution being offered for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the persistent interest and likely reseller attention.

With any luck, the retail limits will curb bulk purchases and increase access for genuine collectors and everyday enthusiasts alike.
